Spotlight: Talking Dance ‘n’ Luv with Alicia and Roy Street

posted in: Uncategorized | 37

Award-winning authors Alicia and Roy Street are here today to talk about their Dance ‘n’ Luv contemporary romance series. Pull up a chair and help me welcome them!

1. Why Dance ‘n’ Luv?

Roy: For years dance had been the most important thing in Alicia’s life. But after decades of classes, rehearsals and performing, the wear and tear to her knees led to an injury forcing her to leave the profession she loved so much. Since she’d always been an avid reader she decided to try her hand at writing. We at first did a chick lit mystery series that had been traditionally published. Not surprising she next turned to the idea of a romance involving a dancer. But I’m the one who named it the Dance ‘n’ Luv series.

2. Why did you choose Long Island’s North Fork as the setting?

We wanted a location that was close to the dance capital, New York City, and yet far enough away to reflect the warmth and community of a small town environment. Long Island’s North Fork not only fits that description but it juts over a hundred miles into the Atlantic. The rural countryside combines with windswept beaches to create a rustic seaside atmosphere — perfect for romance.

3. Are all your characters dancers?

Alicia: Most are not. But all our heroines are dancers of one kind or another. Not necessarily stars, like Casey, who never got her dream of dancing with a big company, Amanda, who is divorced, disgusted and done with Broadway, Tanya, a ballroom dancer running from a truth inside her heart, and Jenna, a perfectionistic ballerina who will be featured our next book.

Roy: We also have a community of characters from a variety of backgrounds. Like a single dad who is a trucking mogul with a little boy who teaches him how to trust, a narcissistic rock star turned wine-maker, a fisherman who likes to skinny dip, a wise old war vet mechanic, a sexy down-to-earth gardener with a secret enemy, a cook who opened her own coffee shop, an eccentric curator from the maritime museum, and a philosophical astronomer with a passion for running 10K races.

4. Can I enjoy Dance ‘n’ Luv Book Two if I haven’t read Book One?

Absolutely. While certain related characters appear in various degrees in each story the books are complete in themselves and can be enjoyed individually and in any order.

5. Is writing together a challenge?

Alicia: Sometimes. But we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and allow for that. Not to mention having a built-in critique partner.

Roy: But we’ve had reviewers comment on the inability to tell the books were written by two people. And I take pride in the fact that several have said the male characters had a certain realism they don’t always find.

6. Tell Me More About This Dynamic Duo

In addition to being part of today’s Indie writers movement, Alicia and Roy are traditionally published authors and recipients of a Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense. They share backgrounds in the performing arts and spent many gypsy years living and working in the different neighborhoods of New York City and Philadelphia. Alicia as a dancer, choreographer and teacher; Roy in theater, visual arts and standup comedy.

Readers – I’ve read Touch Me and Tango and loved it! What especially grabbed me, besides the amazing writing, was the way the characters’ professions were weaved into their points of view. Alicia and Roy have a knack for writing characters that are truly believable. Congratulations on your amazing series!

I've read all the books, and my favorite is the latest release, Touch Me and Tango! It's so much fun and you get so wrapped up in the characters. Thanks for the post, Kristine, Alicia and Roy!

Tamara – Touch Me and Tango was wonderful. I even read it in one go. And as soon as I finished it, I knew the others in the series would have to go in by TBR pile 🙂 Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

Thanks so much, Tamara! And that's great feedback, as I was worried whether the second book came up to the first or not. As an author yourself, I'm sure you know about that nervousness over the latest book syndrome.

Loved it! Thank you for sharing more of your series with us. I'm looking forward to reading the other two books as well. And as a reminder to everyone (even though you said it in the post), these books can definitely be read stand-alone or out of order. Wishing you tremendous success!

    Great interview, girls & guy!

I love reading Alicia's background to her books and adore this series! The characterisations are very well done and 'leap' (pardon the pun) off the page.

    I can recommend this series!

  3. Christy Hayes

I love reading about how stories come about. Thank you for the great interview. I'm glad Alicia was able to use her love of dance in her books. I can't imagine writing with my husband, but I'm glad it works for you!!

  4. Natalie G. Owens

It's so nice to learn more about you, Roy and Alicia. Your careers are so colorful and fascinating. It's always heartening to hear people spending a lifetime doing what they love. It's all about love, right? So, my question is, do you still live in New York City? And if not, do you miss it at all?

  5. Alicia Street

I agree – it's all about love. Thanks for coming by, Natalie. We live just outside Philly now, but we are walking distance to a train that goes to NYC so we can get our 'fix' when we need it. 🙂

  6. Pat O'Dea Rosen

Alicia and Roy, you make it look easy to transition from performance-oriented careers to writing. It's not, of course, but we only see your final products–the books–and not the practice drafts, drills, classes, and rehearsals. Thanks for giving us a behind-the-scenes tour.

Thanks, Kristine, for hosting my favorite writer duo.

  7. Sheila Seabrook

I loved Touch Me and Tango, and I love the covers of the whole series. I always find it so interesting to see how two writers can write so seamlessly. Can't wait for the next in the series!

  8. Rhonda Hopkins

Wonderful interview, Alcia and Roy! I'm enjoying this series so far. Great characters and stories. And Roy – I can't tell what belongs to you and what belongs to Alica, either. It is all very seamless. 🙂 BTW…the covers are awesome!

    • Kristine Cayne

Rhonda – you bring up a good point – it's impossible to tell which parts were written by whom. Alicia and Roy truly form a seamless writing pair. Thank you for your comment!
